We were on hiatus for a little while but we are officially back. And we are back full force with a new feature that reviews different products. The first of which is how to control your car in snow or even icy conditions. I personally have a rear wheel drive car which is tougher to control in the snow. Mostly German or sports cars are rear wheel drive. American and Japanese cars for the post part are front wheel drive.
Regardless of the type of car you have, even if it is 4 Wheel Drive (best for snow), you should definitely get snow tires put on in the winter season. A lot of people just buy a cheap set of rims to put the tires on and change them with the season.
The two main winter tires out there that I heard great things about are Dunlop Winter Tires and Bridgestone Blizzaks. Blizzaks are great on ice but I have read that their life is cut in half because of the way they are made. Dunlops will last you much longer. I went with the Dunlops and we had our first snow for me to try them out on a couple of days ago. My first impressons are very positive. The slipping was reduced greatly and I had a lot more control of the car. Obviously it goes without saying that you should still be careful when driving in bad conditions but these tires do make a huge difference. Braking was also a great deal better with these tires compared to my regular tires.
As a note, don't let anyone talk you into getting All-Season tires for driving in snow or terrible winter conditions. They don't come anywhere near winter tires. Also having tried Dunlops for my first winter tire, I would highly recommend them. You can buy a set of tires and rims from tirerack.com which has pretty good prices overall.
Logically speaking, if you get into an accident you probably have a deductible of about $500, not to mention the hassle of accidents. If these tires save you from 1 accident, then they have already paid for themselves, so I think they are more than worth it.
